Peace Poem
Peace Poem was created to commemorate the 100 years since the first day of peace after WWI. The large-scale mobile artwork illuminates the beautiful words of acclaimed poet Robert Montgomery.
Starting in the pandemic, it has been seen by thousands of people across the UK. Peace Poem has been engaging communities in discussions about the fragile nature of peace, the strength of the communities and individuals who work to sustain it. Now more than ever, the world needs a shining beacon of peace.
Throughout the evening, the poem will be animated by beautiful, illuminated butterflies. In many cultures across the world, butterflies are often seen as symbols of change, rebirth and hope.

ARTIST / STUDIO BIO
Emergency Exit Arts (EEA) is one of Britain’s pioneering outdoor arts companies, creating magical experiences in the places where you live, learn, work and play. Founded 1980, EEA began as an artists’ collective born out of a desire to radically transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. At a time of social and political change they aspired to make a positive difference to people’s lives, particularly those who have been discriminated against and those living in economically excluded communities across London and the UK. Now a registered charity and one of the Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisations, EEA has evolved into the reputable outdoor arts company it is today, still pioneering and still inspiring change through creativity.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The poem can be viewed on both sides, so there is ample viewing space. It is 14ft and so viewable for all. The butterflies are tall, kinetic puppets, operated by a team of talented puppeteers. They may glide above your head, but movements will be slow and dreamlike. There is no music with this artwork, but Southside can generally be quite a thriving and bustling place. If you would feel more comfortable attending when it is quieter, we would advise starting in this location early in the evening.
This artwork will feature on our Audio Description tour on Thursday 20th February. Find more information on the tour and details on how to register here.
